Developing Outcomes and Performance Based Assessment

Overview

Competency, performance or outcomes based training is now well established in many of the world’s most advanced economies. It is also increasingly being introduced into many developing economies. Even where such training has been established there remain those who are sceptical about its effectiveness.This is often based on misinformation or in some cases ineffective understanding and / or application of the processes involved – particularly where assessment is concerned. This course aims to provide an overview of the principles and practices involved in outcomes based training and to enable participants to create and implement a range of outcomes and performance based assessments.

By attending this course participants will gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts of outcomes / performance based training as exemplified by competency based training (CBT) Participants will investigate the key concepts associated with CBT in particular the principles of designing and implementing outcomes / performance assessment. Given the opportunity to implement performance assessment participants can expect to measure more accurately learner performance.

Comparative views of outcomes / performance based training versus traditional training; analysis of competency statements; performance standards; assessing performance; performance tasks; task analysis; assessing underpinning job knowledge; types and levels of knowledge.

Upon completion of the course participants will be expected to:

  • Identify the strengths and limitations of a outcomes based training
  • Create and apply a range of outcomes / performance based assessments
  • Carry out simple task analysis
  • Create draft competency statements in own subject specialism

Sessions will have a strong active participation component with facilitators keen to ensure that the experience will be fun and enjoyable as well as educational.
